What is a Card Game?

By Neal Taparia - 7/3/2024

Card games have been popular with humans for generations, and this is largely due to their simple nature and accessibility–all you need is a pack of playing cards. A card game is a type of game in which cards are the primary playing device.

While different card games can have different rules, strategies, and ways to win, they all have one thing in common: they revolve around playing cards. They often include dealing a certain number of cards to players, following the rules of the game, and winning or losing points based on the number or type of cards that are collected or played during the course of the game.

Playing Card Suits

Each standard deck of cards contains fifty-two cards divided into four suits: Hearts, Diamonds, Spades, and Clubs. Hearts and Diamonds are red, and Spades and Clubs are black.

Each suit contains cards from Ace to ten, as well as a Jack, Queen, and King. Many decks also contain two Joker cards, but these are not typically used in games. Depending on the game, Aces can be used to represent the number one, or they can be the highest card in the pack.

Many strategy games with cards require players to collect a complete set of a certain suit, use the cards to reach a certain value, or avoid collecting certain suits or cards. This requires strategy and skill, as well as understanding of the game being played.

Popular Card Games

Some of the most popular playing card games include:

Spades

Spades is a strategy game usually played with two teams of two players. The aim is to predict how many tricks will be played in the next round. Bids over or under the actual amount leads to points deducted, and the game ends when one team reaches one hundred points. The team with the lowest number of points wins.

Hearts

As the name suggests, this is a game focused around the suit of Hearts. Players take turns playing their hand, and points are awarded for each card played.

Hearts have the lowest number of points, while the Queen of Spades is dreaded by players, as this earns you thirteen points. The first player to reach one hundred points loses, and the player with the lowest number of points is named the winner.

Blackjack

Also known as ‘twenty-one,’ Blackjack is a simple card game with one goal: be the first to beat the value of the dealer's hand without going over a total of twenty-one. The dealer has two cards in hand and one card face up.

Players also start with two cards and can choose one of two options in each round: to ‘hit’ or to ‘stand.’ A ‘hit’ means the dealer will give them additional cards which can help beat the value of the dealer's hand, but this can risk putting them over a total card value of twenty-one, which can cost the game.

Bridge

Like Spades, Bridge is focused on winning tricks. Teams take turns picking a card from their hand and placing it face up. The highest card played in each round wins the trick, and reaching one hundred points wins you the game.
